UK Households Brace for £215 April Bill Increases Amid Cost of Living Concerns
UK households are set to face significant financial pressure this April, with four major bill hikes expected to cost an average of £214.10 annually. Sarah Pennells, a consumer finance specialist at Royal London, has issued a stark warning, dubbing this period "Anxious April" due to the timing of these increases. The rises come as ongoing conflict in the Middle East threatens to further inflate the UK's cost of living, adding to household burdens.
Council Tax Increases Lead the Way
Council tax is one of the primary contributors to the bill hikes, with most local authorities in England implementing the maximum allowable increase of 4.99% for the 2025/26 financial year. The average Band D council tax in England will rise to £2,280, resulting in an average annual increase of £109 per household. Residents should have already received notification letters from their councils detailing these new charges, which are set to take effect from April.
Water Bills Surge Amid Investment Demands
Water bills are also on the rise, with an average increase of 5.4% or £33 per year in England and Wales. In Scotland, the hike is even steeper at 8.7%. These increases, which bring the average annual water bill to £639, are attributed to necessary investments after years of underfunding, despite public concerns over sewage discharges into waterways. United Utilities customers will see the largest average increase of £57, while other regions will also experience noticeable jumps.
TV Licence and Connectivity Costs Climb
The TV licence fee is increasing from £174.50 to £180, a rise of £5.50 annually, affecting anyone who watches live TV or uses BBC iPlayer. However, households relying solely on streaming services like Netflix or Disney+ are exempt from this charge. Additionally, mobile and broadband bills are set to rise, with most providers increasing costs by £1 to £4 per month, leading to an average annual increase of £67.20 for many UK homes.
