The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced a significant extension to a key financial support scheme, ensuring millions of households across the UK will continue to receive vital assistance with their energy costs. The Warm Home Discount, a perk worth £150 each winter, will now remain in place until the 2030/2031 financial year under the current Labour Party government.
Long-Term Commitment to Tackling Energy Affordability
This confirmation means that eligible families and individuals can plan ahead with greater certainty, receiving the discount annually for the next six winters. From 2025/26 through to 2030/31, this amounts to a total of £900 in support for those who qualify. The move is part of the government's broader strategy to address the ongoing cost of living and energy affordability crisis, which has placed considerable strain on household budgets.
Government Statement on Support Scheme
Labour Party MP Ed Miliband emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating: "Tackling the affordability crisis is the government’s number one priority. That is why we are confirming to millions of eligible families across the country that they will receive the £150 Warm Home Discount every winter for the rest of the decade." He added that this measure aims to provide "much-needed peace of mind" during the colder months, as the administration works to reduce bills permanently.
Full List of Qualifying Benefits
Eligibility for the Warm Home Discount is primarily based on receipt of certain means-tested benefits. The criteria include individuals or households receiving:
- Housing Benefit
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income Support
- The 'Savings Credit' element of Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
How the Scheme Operates for Recipients
For those who are eligible, the process is designed to be straightforward. If you qualify, you will receive a letter confirming that no action is required on your part. Your electricity supplier will automatically apply the £150 discount to your bill by 31 March 2026. In cases where additional information is needed, the letter will instruct you to contact a dedicated helpline by 28 February 2026 to verify your details.
Understanding 'Core Group 2' Eligibility
It is important to note that even if you do not receive the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit, you may still be eligible under the 'core group 2' category. This applies if, as of 24 August 2025, all the following conditions are met:
- Your energy supplier participates in the Warm Home Discount scheme.
- You or your partner receive one of the specified means-tested benefits.
- Your name or your partner's name is on the electricity bill.
The DWP advises that meeting these criteria could secure the discount for many additional households, broadening the reach of this essential support.
This extension underscores the government's commitment to providing consistent, long-term aid to vulnerable groups, ensuring they are better equipped to manage energy expenses during the challenging winter periods ahead.
