Schools Close and Events Cancelled as Heatwave Hits Birmingham
Schools have closed and countless events have been cancelled as Birmingham continues to bake in extreme heat. A rare threat to life has been issued by the Met Office as temperatures are forecast to top 36°C in the city.
Some schools are still open while others are sending pupils home around midday as they struggle to keep classrooms cool. The disruption is widespread, with many parents having to make last-minute arrangements for their children.
Greggs Closes Stores in Black Country for Safety
Greggs has closed a few stores in the Black Country for the safety of customers and staff. The bakery chain took the decision as extreme heat made conditions uncomfortable and potentially hazardous.
Met Office Forecast: 36°C and High Humidity
The Met Office said: "A dry, warm and sunny start to the day. Turning even hotter as the day goes on with extreme heat continuing along with high humidity. Perhaps some high cloud moving in at times in the afternoon. Maximum temperature 36°C."
The rare threat to life warning is in place as the heatwave continues, with health officials urging people to stay hydrated, avoid the sun during peak hours, and check on vulnerable neighbours.
