DWP Basic State Pensioners to Receive £1,480 in June Payments
DWP Basic State Pensioners Get £1,480 in June

Basic state pensioners could be handed two payments in June, depending on their payment date. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) pays the basic state pension based on your National Insurance number. If your payment is on a Monday, you will be paid twice in June, as there are five Mondays in the sixth month of the year.

The amount for people who reached state pension age from April 2016 will rise by 4.8 per cent, from £176.45 to £184.90 per week. This means a monthly total of £1,480 for older retirees. Many people on the basic rate also receive substantial top-ups, known as additional state pension, S2P, or Serps, but only if these were earned earlier in life through extra salary-related National Insurance contributions.

Additional Payments for Over-80s

People who are 80 or over and resident in the UK qualify for a 'category D' state pension. This will also rise by 4.8 per cent to £110.77 in April. However, if you already receive more than that, the extra payment is not added on top. The over-80s additional payment remains frozen at 25p.

Protected Portions and Inherited Pensions

If you reached state pension age after April 2016 but had already built up enough additional state pension, S2P, or Serps to qualify for more than the headline flat rate earlier in your working life, you will receive the difference between the two on top. This 'protected' portion of your state pension, above the flat rate, will increase by 3.8 per cent.

The DWP has confirmed that the Additional, Serps, or State Second Pension elements of the state pension will rise in line with inflation at 3.8 per cent from April. If you have inherited a portion of a spouse or civil partner's state pension since April 2016, this will increase by 3.8 per cent. However, if you inherited their basic state pension dating from before 2016, it will go up by 4.8 per cent.
