DWP issues biggest Pension Credit update for pensioners

The Department for Work and Pensions has issued its biggest update yet for state pensioners, focusing on Pension Credit awareness. Labour MP Torsten Bell, the pensions minister, addressed concerns about pensioner poverty raised by Conservative MP Sir John Hayes.

State Pension Increase

From 6 April, both the basic and new State Pensions increased by 4.8%, benefiting over 12 million pensioners by up to £575. Bell stated: "The Government is committed to supporting pensioners, ensuring they have financial security and dignity in retirement."

Pension Credit Campaign

The DWP confirmed that maximising Pension Credit take-up is a key priority. They have been running the biggest campaign to date encouraging pensioners and their families to check eligibility and apply. The Standard Minimum Guarantee was also increased by 4.8% from April, protecting pensioners on the lowest incomes.

Housing Benefit continues to support pensioners who rent, while pensioner homeowners on income-related benefits, including Pension Credit, may receive Support for Mortgage Interest.

Crisis and Resilience Fund

Bell also announced the introduction of the new Crisis and Resilience Fund from April, providing a long-term mechanism for local authorities to support vulnerable households at risk of hardship. The fund will offer a safety net for people on low incomes facing financial crises, including unforeseen increases in essential costs.
