Meter Reading Urged Before July Energy Price Cap Rise

Households with British Gas, EDF, EON, Ovo, and Octopus are being urged to take a photo of their meters before the new energy price cap takes effect on July 1. From July 1 to September 30, 2026, the price cap will be £1,862 per year, a 13% increase compared to the previous cap period. This figure is based on the average energy unit rate and standing charge for customers paying by Direct Debit in England, Scotland, and Wales.

Expert Advice on Avoiding Overcharges

Ben Gallizzi, energy expert at Uswitch, said: “Millions of households should take a moment to read their meter at the end of the month to avoid being overcharged for their energy due to higher prices kicking in from July. Customers who don’t have a smart meter should submit their readings before or on Wednesday 1 July, so their supplier has an accurate view of their account. If you’re on a standard tariff, you have only two weeks to avoid higher energy prices from 1 July.”

Fixed Deals Offer Savings

Gallizzi added: “There are currently 26 fixed deals available that are cheaper than July’s price cap, with average savings of £251, so act now to save yourself money. It’s important to run a quick comparison to see options tailored to your personal energy usage. The price cap is going up, but your bills don’t have to.”

MoneySavingExpert Guidance

MoneySavingExpert (MSE), founded by Martin Lewis, also issued guidance. MSE stated: “If you have smart meters that are working properly in smart mode, so they're regularly sending meter readings to your provider, there's no need to do anything, as they do it automatically. You may want to double-check your meters are sending reads, though. You can usually see this in your account or on your bill. You can also take a photo of your meters on the day, so you have the readings for safety.”

Impact on Households

The 13% increase in the price cap means typical annual bills will rise by over £200 for many households. With 26 fixed deals currently cheaper than the cap, switching could lock in lower rates. However, customers must act quickly before July 1 to avoid the higher charges. Those without smart meters should submit readings manually, while smart meter users should verify their devices are transmitting data correctly.
