New bin collection rules will come into force for more households in the West Midlands from Monday, July 20, as part of a national shake-up of collection rules. Residents in Tamworth and Lichfield will be affected, with food waste no longer allowed in general waste bins.
Food waste ban and new bins
Most households will receive two new food waste bins: a small indoor caddy for daily scraps and a larger outdoor bin for weekly collection. Councils will notify residents when changes apply in their area.
Councillor Phil Whitehouse, from Lichfield District Council, said: "Food waste no longer has to go in your normal waste bin. By collecting it separately in your food waste caddy every week, we can turn everyday food scraps into renewable energy and fertiliser rather than sending them to the energy from waste plant."
Impact on residents
Residents must ensure food waste is placed in the new caddies, not general bins. The initiative aims to increase recycling rates and reduce landfill. New bins are being delivered to homes in Tamworth and Lichfield ahead of the start date.
This change is part of a broader national rollout, with different areas introducing rules at different times. Households are advised to check local council communications for specific details.
