Sainsbury's has rolled out a new feature in its Nectar loyalty app called Pickybits, allowing customers to rate and review deli products. The initiative aims to enhance customer engagement and provide real-time feedback on items such as cheeses, meats, and olives sold at the deli counter.
How Pickybits Works
Shoppers can scan a QR code on their receipt or use the Nectar app to access the Pickybits platform. They can then rate products on a scale of one to five stars and leave a short review. Each review earns customers 10 Nectar points, equivalent to 5p, as a reward for their participation.
The feature is part of Sainsbury's broader strategy to digitize the shopping experience and gather valuable data on customer preferences. According to a Sainsbury's spokesperson, "Pickybits allows us to hear directly from our customers about what they love from our deli counters, helping us to improve and tailor our offerings."
Customer Response and Impact
Early feedback from users has been mixed. Some appreciate the opportunity to voice opinions and earn points, while others find the process cumbersome. One shopper commented, "It's a nice idea, but I wish I could rate items from my whole shop, not just the deli."
Since its launch, thousands of reviews have been submitted, with popular items like mature cheddar and smoked salmon receiving high ratings. The data collected helps Sainsbury's identify top sellers and potential improvements in product quality and variety.
Broader Context of Loyalty Programs
This move aligns with trends in the retail sector where loyalty programs are evolving to include interactive elements. Nectar, which already partners with brands like Argos and eBay, is leveraging user-generated content to increase engagement. A retail analyst noted, "Programs that involve customers in product feedback can foster a sense of community and loyalty."
Sainsbury's plans to expand Pickybits to other departments in the future, subject to the success of the deli trial. The company emphasizes that all reviews are moderated to ensure authenticity and relevance.
How to Get Started
Customers with a Nectar card can download or update the Nectar app, then look for the Pickybits section after purchasing deli items. Scanning the receipt QR code or entering the transaction number allows them to start rating. Points are credited within 48 hours.
For those without a Nectar card, signing up is free and can be done online or in-store. The app also offers other features like personalized offers and fuel discounts.
