Major Supermarkets Pull Pre-Packaged Fruit Over Salmonella Fears
Supermarkets Pull Fruit Over Salmonella Fears

Multiple major supermarkets and coffee shops are pulling pre-packaged fresh fruit from their shelves due to contamination concerns. Health authorities fear the items may contain Salmonella, which can cause severe gastrointestinal illness.

Retailers Affected by the Recall

The safety warning, issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), affects several major household brands across the high street. The current list of retailers removing these items includes Asda, Morrison's, Tesco, Waitrose, Marks and Spencer, and Sainsbury's.

The bacteria behind the warning cause a gut condition called salmonellosis. Official figures show that the stomach bug affects roughly 23,000 people nationwide each year.

Health Risks and Vulnerable Groups

While most people experience a few days of sickness and stomach upsets, the bug poses a much greater threat to vulnerable groups. It can be particularly harmful to young children, the elderly, or those with existing health problems, occasionally leading to a hospital admission, writes Neil Shaw on Devon Live.

If you do happen to contract the bug, you will remain highly contagious to others as long as you are displaying symptoms. Current health guidelines note that you must isolate from your workplace or school until you have been entirely clear of any symptoms for two full days.

The severity of the bacterial infection is highlighted by annual health records. Each year, between 30 and 50 people across the country lose their lives as a result of contracting the condition.

Symptoms and Advice

Symptoms caused by Salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps. If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should stay away from work, school or nursery until you have been symptom-free for at least 48 hours to avoid passing it on to others.

Prepworld is recalling the products. Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling them. The notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought them.

A Food Standards Agency spokesman said: "If you have bought any of the products, do not eat them. Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund."
