UK tourists in France are now banned from ordering three types of alcoholic drinks—high-alcohol beers, fortified wines, and spirits—as the country enforces strict measures during a severe heatwave. The restrictions, aimed at reducing the risk of people falling into water, apply along the banks of the Seine and the Canal St-Martin in Paris, as well as in other major cities like Lyon.
Heatwave Prompts Nationwide Cancellations
France confirmed the cancellation of the nationwide Fête de la Musique event this week, as orange and red weather warnings for extreme heat have been issued. The national weather service, Météo-France, warned of “very high temperatures setting in for the long term,” with a heatwave of “exceptional severity and duration” likely to break monthly and possibly all-time records.
Official Statements and Measures
France’s culture minister, Catherine Pégard, urged “extreme vigilance,” while Paris mayor Emmanuel Gregoire highlighted the risks: “The combination of alcohol, heat and proximity to water – those are three risk factors that don’t mix well.” The government stated that “prefects will issue decrees banning alcohol consumption in public spaces in the departments under red alert,” following a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu. Instructions have been given not to offer alcohol at state-organized events.
Transport and Health Warnings
Jean Castex, head of the SNCF state rail service, advised “more vulnerable passengers” to avoid trains and postpone journeys if possible, warning that air-conditioning systems and rail infrastructure were being “heavily tested.” In the UK, temperatures are expected to reach 38°C by the end of the week.
Presidential Call for Solidarity
President Emmanuel Macron released a statement calling for solidarity: “In the face of this heatwave, let’s look out for one another. Let’s all keep a close eye on our elderly, our children, and those who are isolated or vulnerable.” The alcohol ban is part of broader efforts to protect public health during the extreme weather event.
