Birmingham voters heading to the polls on Thursday, May 7, are being strongly urged not to forget their photo identification. The Electoral Commission has issued a reminder that without acceptable ID, individuals will not be permitted to vote.
Required Identification
To receive a ballot paper, voters must present an acceptable form of photo ID at the polling station. Valid options include a passport, driving licence, older person's or disabled person's bus pass, or a Voter Authority Certificate. Expired ID is acceptable as long as the voter remains recognisable in the photograph.
Polling station staff will check the ID before issuing a ballot. A private area will be available for anyone who wishes to have their photo ID viewed in private.
Polling Hours and Count
Polling stations across Birmingham will be open from 7am to 10pm. Votes will be counted at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham city centre on Friday.
Electoral Commission Advice
Niki Nixon from the Electoral Commission said: "If you’re planning on voting tomorrow at the English local and mayoral elections, don’t forget to bring photo ID. You’ll need to show it to polling station staff before they give you your ballot paper. Don’t risk being turned away, check you have ID with you before heading to the polling station."
For those without ID or whose Voter Authority Certificate has not arrived, an emergency proxy can be appointed to vote on their behalf. This must be arranged by contacting the local council before 5pm on election day. The appointed proxy will also need their own acceptable photo ID.
