The Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council has remained under Conservative control following the 2026 local elections, but new parties have secured representation for the first time. The count, held at the Utilita Arena, saw the Conservatives win 19 seats, Labour three, and Reform and the Greens one each.
Key Results
Although the Conservatives lost one seat compared to 2022, they still hold a strong majority. Labour dropped from four to three seats. Ten new councillors were elected: six Conservatives, two Labour, and one each for Reform and the Greens. Michael Hunt (Reform) won in Roughley ward, while Ben Auton (Green) secured a seat after seven years of standing in various elections.
City Council Sweep
On Birmingham City Council, the Conservatives swept all 10 Sutton wards, gaining two seats in Sutton Vesey. John Cooper and Anja Pawson ousted Labour's Rob Pocock, who had served since 2021. Labour also lost Kath Scott's seat; Charlotte Fieldhouse moved to the town council for Vesey, and Alex Cowley was elected for Labour in Vesey.
New Councillors
New Conservative councillors include Sam Ward (Mere Green), Martin Clarke (Reddicap), Tristan Griffiths-Hughes (Roughley), Robin Cook (Walmley and Minworth), Clare Horrocks (Wylde Green), and Gurmeet Singla (Wylde Green). Simon Ward and Martin Clarke retained their Four Oaks seats.
Council Leader's Statement
Town council leader Simon Ward (Four Oaks, Cons.) said: "Given the national results, this is a strong and creditable performance. At city council level, we have taken all 10 seats. We saved libraries and community centres, stood up for Sutton Park, opposed green belt developments, and welcomed Harvey Norman and Aldi to the town centre." He added: "I want to put Sutton Park in a trust, secure more devolution of services, and lead the town's 500th anniversary celebrations in 2028."
Opposition Voices
Ben Auton (Green, Sutton Trinity) said: "It feels brilliant to finally be elected. I may be a lone voice, but I'll be a loud one. I want to reopen Sutton Coldfield library, invest properly in Sutton Park, and help residents with housing issues." Charlotte Fieldhouse (Labour, Vesey) added: "It's incredible. I've loved local politics since I was 14. I want to represent young people and families. Different parties on the council are essential."
