A Midlands gem has been named among the best places to live in England. Lichfield was said by experts to have "culture and character in spades", along with its famous "absolute stunner" of a cathedral.
The leafy Staffordshire city is a favourite for families from the Midlands and beyond. It has now been given some national recognition after being named among the best places to live by experts at Muddy Stilettos.
Why Lichfield Stands Out
They said Lichfield has mastered the sweet spot of having "all the charm of a market town with the buzz of somewhere twice its size". The city is also home to some of the region's top schools and open and scenic green spaces. Crucially, it's far enough away from the big cities to feel calm while remaining in easy reach thanks to good transport links.
Lichfield is only around half an hour from Birmingham by car, while there are frequent train options connecting the two places. The city is ideal for a day out with kids, while couples and friends can sample the many pubs and restaurants on offer.
What the Experts Say
The judging panel at Muddy Stilettos said: "Swap the city slog for cobbles, culture and character in spades. Lichfield’s got all the charm of a market town with the buzz of somewhere twice its size – indie cafés, open-air theatre, family festivals and a thriving creative scene."
"Families rave about the schools and parks, while London leavers fall for the Georgian terraces and smart conversions tucked around the cathedral. The events calendar’s lively too, from the week-long Lichfield Festival to the Proms in Beacon Park (think picnic blankets and plenty of fizz)."
"Pop to nearby Kings Bromley or Whittington for a dose of village calm – but fair warning: it’s the kind of place where a quick coffee run easily turns into an all-afternoon affair."
Highlights of Lichfield
They added: "Lichfield Cathedral is an absolute stunner – all three spires and full of atmosphere. Book the secret tower tour for jaw-dropping views. Beacon Park is a gem too, offering 70 acres of green space with festivals, playgrounds and room to roam."
"Just outside town, The Fig & Olive at Coppice is your go-to for sensational brunches, local produce, and a beautifully styled interiors store."
