Lidl has brought forward its plans to demolish the former Harborne Day Care Centre, accelerating the timeline after launching proposals earlier this year. The supermarket chain filed an application to demolish the former Birmingham City Council building in May, with plans to construct a new location on the 2.5-acre site.
Store details and community response
If approved, the development would feature a 24,000 sq ft store and a 120-space car park. A consultation launched last month received an overwhelming response from over 300 people, with 93% of respondents in favor of the proposals. The consultation stated that the transformed site would “serve the community again.”
Demolition timeline and job creation
All buildings on the site would be demolished if plans are approved, with total clearance expected before a planned start date of 2027. The location off West Boulevard in Quinton could provide 40 jobs to the area. Harborne Day Care Centre was shut down and sold off last year, causing devastation among the local community.
Local councillor's concerns
Councillor Sam Forsyth noted that while the development could be a “welcome addition” to the area, he urged the chain to consider traffic concerns. The supermarket chain is moving forward with the project after the initial application in May, aiming to bring a new retail option to the community.
