Olton Home Decision Delayed After Public Disrupts Meeting
Olton Home Decision Delayed After Meeting Disruption

Solihull planners have postponed a decision on whether to permit the construction of a proposed four-bedroom home in Olton, following a disruptive outburst from a member of the public during a planning committee meeting.

Public Outburst and Site Visit Request

The strength of local opposition was evident when an individual interrupted the meeting, shouting that residents of nearby Fenton Court had not been allowed to speak. Chairman Councillor Bob Grinsell advised the individual to wait and see the outcome before making a complaint. The person then left the room, calling the proceedings a 'farce'.

Applicant Warmthhomes submitted plans last summer to build a two-storey detached house on garden land behind number 29 Ulverley Crescent. Neighbours and ward councillor James Bradley submitted 12 letters of objection during the public consultation, leading to the application being referred to the committee on May 27.

Objections and Concerns

Concerns raised included 'overdevelopment', impact on neighbours, and the proposal being 'out of character' for the area. Kiran Sharma, speaking on behalf of residents, invited the committee to visit the site to see the impact firsthand. Councillor Bradley emphasised the unsuitability due to proximity to surrounding properties, stating the house would 'sit on its own in a car park'.

Representing the applicant, Akaash Chudasama argued the site was in an accessible suburban location and that the proposal was acceptable in principle, contributing to local housing supply. Planning officer Kim Allen noted that the report addressed overlooking concerns, with no direct overlooking into neighbours' properties.

Committee Decision

During the debate, Councillor Jane Lamden supported a site visit, saying 'there is a lot to look at'. Councillor David Hoey agreed, and the committee unanimously voted to defer the decision pending a site visit. If the visit occurs soon, the matter could return to the next scheduled meeting on June 17.
