Primark Recalls Pepper Mills Over Lead Contamination Risk
Primark Recalls Pepper Mills Over Lead Risk

Primark has issued an urgent recall for three models of its pepper mills after tests revealed the products contain excess concentrations of lead, posing a serious chemical risk. The Office for Product Safety and Standards announced that the items do not meet the requirements of the REACH Enforcement Regulations 2008.

Affected Products and Identification

The recalled products are described by Primark as "three models of pepper mill in brown and green." The affected model numbers are m6772201, 6770801, and 3022201. Consumers can also check the barcodes: 5397349037640, 5397349037541, and 5397349075604. Primark operates its world's largest store in Birmingham, where the recall is being enforced.

Health Risks and Symptoms

Lead exposure can be harmful, especially to unborn babies and young children. The NHS notes that infants and young children absorb a greater proportion of ingested lead than adults. Symptoms in young children may include irritability, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, hearing loss, developmental delay, and learning difficulties. Adults can also experience illness from lead exposure, though children are at increased risk. The risk of lead poisoning is generally very small due to legislation restricting lead in paints, petrol, and food containers, but this recall addresses a specific contamination.

Consumer Action Required

Primark has recalled the product from end users. A statement from the Office for Product Safety and Standards said: "The product has been recalled from end users by Primark. Consumers should stop using the product immediately and return it to their nearest Primark store for a full refund. For further information, please access the Primark Live Chat."

Anyone experiencing symptoms potentially related to lead exposure should contact their GP and mention concerns about lead sources. However, experiencing these symptoms does not necessarily mean lead poisoning is present.
