Walsall's Historic Dancehall Flats Plan Rejected Again by Council

Plans to convert a former Walsall dancehall into three flats have been refused by Walsall Council, marking the second rejection for the site in recent years. The application, submitted by Simviraj Ltd, aimed to transform The Lost Lounge, located on the first floor of the historic Victorian Arcade shopping centre, into three separate apartments.

Heritage and Conservation Concerns

The building is Grade II Listed and situated within the Bridge Street Conservation area, described in the application as 'very rundown'. Agent Naim Choudhury stated that the proposal sought to preserve existing building features while making minor alterations to the interior. However, council planning officers refused the application due to several key issues.

Key reasons for refusal include:

  • Lack of amenity space for future occupants
  • Insufficient information about noise pollution
  • Absence of a Heritage Impact Assessment

Previous Application History

This decision follows a previous application in 2024, where the same company applied to redevelop the former nightclub into a nine-bedroom House of Multiple Occupation. That earlier application was also refused by Walsall Council, with reasons including that the development would create a 'cramped, low quality and undesirable living environment' for future residents.

The repeated rejections highlight ongoing challenges in balancing development needs with heritage preservation and community standards in Walsall's conservation areas.
