A broadband expert has issued a warning to more than 20 million households in the UK that use the four largest internet service providers: Virgin Media, BT, TalkTalk, and Sky. Together, these companies serve over 20 million homes, but the expert cautions that customers should never assume these giants offer the best deals or connection quality.
Expert Advice from Which?
Yvette Fletcher, a researcher at the consumer group Which? who leads its telecoms content, explained that many customers remain loyal to the Big Four for years without ever switching. "Customers often stick with them for years, and many have never been with a different provider," she said. However, she added, "Year after year, our research shows that their customers not only pay more, they’re also some of the least satisfied."
Fletcher highlighted that smaller providers typically offer cheaper deals and superior customer service. "If you’re in the market for a new provider, it’s worth exploring whether there’s a less well-known provider that can offer you a better deal," she advised.
Smaller Providers Outrank Big Four
Which? recently compared broadband providers across the UK and found that smaller companies outperformed the Big Four in several categories. The top-ranked provider in the study was Zen Internet, a small firm with just over 200,000 customers nationwide, as reported in 2024.
Meanwhile, Money Saving Expert has identified Fibre Now as the current best deal. For those who can only access standard fibre, the top pick is a 66Mb Plusnet deal priced at £23.99 per month (rising to £27.99 from 1 April 2027 and £31.99 from 1 April 2028), plus an £85 Plusnet reward card via email.
