The Foreign Office has issued a fresh warning for UK tourists planning to visit Ethiopia, advising against all travel to certain areas of the country effective from June 1. The updated guidance comes from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), which has revised its travel advice for the African nation.
Updated Travel Advice
In a statement released on Friday, May 1, the FCDO announced changes to its Entry requirements and Safety and security pages. The office now advises against all travel to specific regions of Ethiopia and recommends only essential travel to other parts. The update includes information about visa applications and a nationwide general election scheduled for June 1.
Visa Requirements
The FCDO clarified that all UK nationals must have a visa to enter Ethiopia for tourism or business purposes. Exceptions apply only to those holding a valid Ethiopian Diplomatic ID Card, Ethiopian Temporary Residents Permit, or Ethiopian Origin ID (Yellow Cards). The office strongly recommends applying online for tourist and business visas before arrival through the official Ethiopian e-visa platform. Applicants need a scanned color copy of their passport and a color passport-sized photo. A 30-day single entry tourist visa is available.
Tourists are warned that they cannot engage in employment, including voluntary work, while on a tourist visa. Violations may result in heavy fines or imprisonment. Those needing to extend their stay can apply for an additional 30 or 90 days in person at the Head Office of the Immigration and Citizenship Service in Addis Ababa before the current visa expires. Overstaying incurs a penalty of 30 US dollars per day, and departure is not permitted until the full amount is paid.
Election Security Warning
The FCDO also highlighted that a nationwide general election is due to be held on June 1, 2026. Tourists are advised to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations and to follow the advice of local authorities. The warning emphasizes staying away from potential hotspots to ensure personal safety.
This advisory follows a previous FCDO warning for UK tourists facing increased risks in other regions. Travelers are urged to check the latest updates before planning any trips to Ethiopia.
