The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has revised its travel guidance for UK tourists heading to South Korea, introducing a new digital entry requirement that can be completed online up to 72 hours before arrival.
New e-Arrival Card System
As of 24 February 2025, passengers travelling to South Korea have the option to submit an electronic arrival card (e-Arrival card) in advance, instead of filling out a paper form upon entry. This digital submission must be made within 72 hours (three days) before your arrival in the country. There is no fee for using the e-Arrival card service. Travellers are advised to visit the official e-Arrival card website for detailed instructions on the submission process. Paper entry declaration forms will continue to be available for those who prefer them.
Visa-Free Travel and K-ETA
UK tourists can enter South Korea for up to 90 days for short-term business or tourism without a visa. However, travellers must possess an onward or return ticket. It is illegal to work in South Korea while visiting visa-free, whether as a teacher or in any other capacity.
South Korea operates an electronic travel authorisation system known as K-ETA. While most visa-free visitors are required to obtain K-ETA approval before departure, British nationals are temporarily exempt from this requirement until 31 December 2026. If you need to apply for a K-ETA, ensure you use the official Korean government K-ETA website.
Important Reminders
For those travelling for purposes other than short-term business or tourism, it is essential to check visa requirements with the South Korean Embassy in the UK. Additionally, anyone in South Korea on a work visa must obtain authorisation from Korean Immigration for any employment changes.
