Foreign Office Issues Critical Warning for UK Tourists in Cyprus

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued an urgent warning to all British nationals currently in Cyprus, advising them to follow five critical instructions immediately. This alert comes amid escalating tensions and ongoing conflict in the Middle East and Gulf states, which pose significant security risks and have already caused travel disruption across the region.

Potential Warship Deployment Under Consideration

In response to the heightened security situation, the Labour Party government is actively considering deploying a warship to Cyprus to enhance protection for an RAF airbase located on the island. Sources indicate that discussions are underway regarding the potential deployment of a warship currently stationed in Portsmouth. This strategic move aims to bolster defence capabilities and ensure the safety of UK assets in the eastern Mediterranean.

Five Essential Actions for British Nationals

The FCDO has outlined five crucial steps that UK tourists and British nationals in Cyprus must take without delay:

  1. Read official guidance: Consult the FCDO website for detailed advice on "how to prepare for a crisis," including recommendations for emergency supplies and actions to take during emergencies.
  2. Sign up for alerts: Register for FCDO Travel Advice email alerts to receive real-time updates and critical information directly.
  3. Monitor media: Stay informed by closely following both local and international news sources for the latest developments.
  4. Follow local authorities: Sign up for local information alerts and resources, and strictly adhere to instructions from Cypriot authorities.
  5. Review travel plans: Continuously reassess departure arrangements and ensure all travel documents are valid and up to date.

Logistical Challenges and Expert Criticism

Currently, no major Royal Navy warships are stationed in or en route to the Middle East. Should the HMS Duncan be deployed from Portsmouth, it would take several days to reach Cyprus, travelling at approximately 30 knots (34.5 mph). This logistical timeline underscores the urgency of the situation.

John Foreman, a former UK defence attache to Moscow, has expressed strong criticism regarding the UK's response. He stated that it is surprising the UK has taken so long to consider deploying a warship to protect its bases in Cyprus. Foreman emphasised that the fact the government is only now "considering" sending a destroyer indicates one should have been deployed already.

He further commented that this deliberation appears to be driven more by news of French naval deployments to the area rather than proactive planning. Foreman added, "The MoD has consistently been behind the power curve and is now scrambling to catch up. This represents a failure of planning, intelligence, and foresight."

The FCDO warns that regional escalation continues to present substantial security threats, making it imperative for all British nationals in Cyprus to heed this advice promptly and remain vigilant.
