A petition calling for an additional bank holiday in England and Wales on June 15 has been launched, urging the UK government to act after Scotland was granted a day off to celebrate its participation in the World Cup.
Scotland's Bank Holiday Confirmed
Scotland will observe a bank holiday on June 15 to mark the country's qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Tartan Army secured their spot in the tournament, ending a 28-year absence from the competition. King Charles officially confirmed the holiday in a royal proclamation, citing the Banking and Financial Dealings Act of 1971.
Petition for England and Wales
The petition, hosted on the Parliamentary website, states: "We want the UK Government to grant a bank holiday on 15 June to England and Wales to recognise Scotland's participation in the World Cup." It argues that since the event is followed across the UK, extending the holiday would be fair and inclusive, boosting morale and supporting local businesses.
The petition urges the Labour government to act, noting that His Majesty the King granted Scotland the holiday based on a proposal from the Scottish Government. If the petition reaches 10,000 signatures, the government must issue a response. If it reaches 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in Parliament. The petition will remain open until September 13, 2026.
Royal Proclamation Details
In the proclamation, King Charles stated: "Whereas, to mark the achievement of Scotland's men's football team competing at the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 28 years, We consider it desirable that Monday, the fifteenth day of June in the year 2026 should be a bank holiday in Scotland." The proclamation was issued at Buckingham Palace on February 3, 2026.
The debate over the bank holiday highlights the ongoing discussion about regional holidays and national celebrations. While Scotland celebrates its World Cup return, supporters in England and Wales are calling for equal recognition, hoping to share in the festivities.
