Sir Keir Starmer has broken his silence on calls for a bonus bank holiday in July. The Labour Party Prime Minister has responded to an early day motion lodged by MPs with cross-party support calling for a July 20 bank holiday if England win the World Cup.
Speaking at the G7 summit on Wednesday, football fan Starmer asked whether a national bank holiday would be granted if England's men triumphed this summer: “I'm not gonna jinx the World Cup, but, you know, the last time we won the World Cup it was a Labour government.
“And so it's absolutely clear that we only win World Cups under a Labour government. So let's hope that this is the next opportunity. He's got a great squad. This is going to be a good game tonight, probably the hardest in the group games this evening.”
Ahead of the Croatia match, the Prime Minister also stated: "Tonight we can dare to dream again. We have a brilliant Three Lions squad, packed with the talent and experience, to get that second star on the shirt.
"Like every England fan, I'll be roaring on Thomas Tuchel, Harry Kane, and the entire England squad. Come on England!"
After a 4-2 victory over Croatia on Wednesday night, manager Thomas Tuchel told ITV: "Even if we lose, it will not change my perception of the last 17 days, but let's do it our way.
"We were too focused on protecting the result. We were a back seven and we didn't defend. If the result doesn't go our way, we want to play our way.
"I tried to encourage them to go for it." The Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, a former Birmingham City star, told ITV: "It wasn't one of those where it was a big drama or standing up and shouting; it was what the team needed.
"We have a mature group with great leaders in there. Everyone knew the level we had to get to. The start of the second half gave us a great platform."
