State Pension Could Rise by £1,895 by 2030 Under Triple Lock

The state pension is set to climb by almost £1,900 by the end of the decade under the triple lock policy maintained by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves. A new forecast from Predictionist indicates that the full new state pension could reach £14,442 by 2029/30, up from the current £12,547, based on a 4.8% annual increase.

Triple Lock Mechanism

The triple lock, originally introduced by the Conservatives and extended by the Labour government, ensures the pension rises each year in line with the highest of inflation, wage growth, or 2.5%. This policy guarantees at least a 2.5% annual increase, regardless of economic conditions.

Calls are growing to scrap the triple lock due to its cost to the nation. However, incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated he has no plans to change the existing rules.

Forecast Details

Predictionist's calculations are based on the 4.8% uprating rate applied from April 2024. While the actual increase could vary, the triple lock ensures a minimum 2.5% rise each year. A spokesperson for Predictionist said: "The important point is that small annual increases become much bigger over time. A 4.8% rise may not sound dramatic in one year, but if it were repeated for a decade it would push the full new state pension above £20,000 a year."

Impact on Pensioners

If the 4.8% rate is sustained, pensioners could see an extra £1,895 per year by 2029/30. The spokesperson cautioned: "That does not mean pensioners should treat £20,000 as promised income. It is a scenario based on the latest uprating rate being repeated."

The triple lock remains a key policy for the government, providing financial security for millions of retirees despite ongoing debates about its long-term sustainability.
