The UK Foreign Office has issued an urgent travel warning for Colombia and Peru, announcing temporary border closures from 6am on Saturday, June 20, to 6am on Monday, June 22, 2026, due to the second round of Colombia's presidential elections.
Border Closure Details
Colombia's land and river borders with Brazil, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela will be closed during this period. The Foreign Office advises travelers to plan ahead and expect significant travel disruptions. Polling stations will be busy, and increased security measures are in place.
“Colombia will hold the second round of presidential elections on Sunday 21 June. Expect busy polling stations, traffic disruption and increased security. Colombia’s land and river borders with Brazil, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Venezuela will be closed from Saturday 20 June at 6am until Monday 22 June at 6am,” the Foreign Office stated.
Safety Advice
Travelers are urged to stay away from large gatherings and follow local authority guidance. Protests and demonstrations are common and can turn violent, leading to police and military presence. “Avoid protests, strikes and demonstrations and follow the advice of local authorities or tour operators if you are affected. Allow extra time to reach your destination and monitor local media, including social media channels,” the warning adds.
There is a heightened risk of violence due to interference by armed groups and criminal gangs in the electoral process. The Foreign Office recommends being alert around polling stations and avoiding political rallies.
Election Context
The second round pits left-wing Senator Ivan Cepeda, who pledges continuity with outgoing President Gustavo Petro, against far-right outsider Abelardo de la Espriella, who promises a break from establishment politics. In the first round on May 31, de la Espriella secured 43.7% of the vote, while Cepeda received 40.9%, neither reaching the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff.
Following the initial results, President Petro wrote on social media: “As president, I do not accept the results of the preliminary count.”
Impact on Travelers
The border closures affect all land and river crossings, impacting travel plans for those in or transiting through Colombia and neighboring countries. The Foreign Office advises monitoring local media and tour operator updates, and allowing extra time for journeys.
