The UK Foreign Office has issued updated travel warnings for four countries: Kyrgyzstan, Peru, Bolivia, and Niger. British tourists and holidaymakers are advised to check the latest guidance before traveling.
Niger: Airport Reopening and LGBT+ Laws
The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated information regarding Niger. Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey has reopened after heavy gunfire on June 18. Travelers should expect increased security checkpoints and possible disruptions on the road between central Niamey and the airport. Additionally, same-sex relationships are illegal in Niger, with penalties including 5 to 10 years imprisonment and fines. The law also applies to those officiating or consenting to same-sex marriages.
Bolivia: Violent Crime Increase
Minor updates have been made for Bolivia, highlighting a rise in robberies from taxis in Santa Cruz, La Paz, and Rurrenabaque. Tourists are urged to exercise caution when using taxi services.
Kyrgyzstan: Unexploded Ordnance Risk
The FCDO warns of unexploded ordnance along the Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border, particularly in the Batken region. Although no clashes have occurred since the 2025 border agreement, the security situation can change rapidly. Travelers should avoid border areas, check local conditions, and follow local authorities' advice.
Peru: Temporary Border Closure
The Peru-Colombia river border crossing will be closed from 6pm on June 20 to 6am on June 22, 2026, due to Colombian presidential elections. Travelers are advised to verify local travel arrangements beforehand.
