UK Heatwave 2026: Met Office Reveals How Long Amber Alert Will Last
UK Heatwave: Met Office Reveals Amber Alert Duration

The United Kingdom is experiencing its first heatwave of June 2026, with temperatures reaching 30°C and above, and highs of 35°C in some areas. The Met Office has issued an amber 'extreme heat' warning, particularly affecting London and the South East. But how long will this hot weather persist? Here's what the experts have to say.

How Long Will the Heatwave Last?

According to Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Greg Wolverson, the high temperatures and sunny conditions are expected to continue well into next week. The most extreme days are predicted for Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd June, when temperatures could peak around the mid-30s Celsius.

Wolverson stated: "While heatwave criteria will be met for some in the south and southeast of England over the weekend, with temperatures into the low 30s Celsius possible, the warmth will expand and intensify at the start of next week, which, coupled with high temperatures overnight, leads to potential impacts."

He added that "tropical nights" – where the temperature does not drop below 20°C – are also likely for some areas, making conditions uncomfortable.

Regional Impacts

The Met Office has warned that temperatures in certain parts of the country could exceed predictions. After the extreme highs, the heatwave is likely to regress, but those living in the south and east may feel the after effects for the longest period. Forecasters have also noted the possibility of isolated thundery downpours.

Health and Safety Advice

With the amber alert in place, authorities are urging people to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups. Staying hydrated, avoiding the sun during peak hours, and checking on elderly neighbours are recommended. The warnings also highlight risks to infrastructure and water safety.
