Bristol City sporting director James Ellis has praised Max Bird for his professionalism as it became clear his time at Ashton Gate was coming to an end. The 25-year-old ended his two-season career with the Robins when he became Birmingham City’s sixth signing of the summer.
Final Appearance and Move to Birmingham
The midfielder made his 162nd and final appearance in the Carabao Cup loss to Walsall earlier this month. He signed a three-year deal with Blues and then made his debut off the bench in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Sheffield United. He will hope to make his full debut when Bristol City come to St Andrew’s on Saturday.
Ellis, speaking to BBC Radio Bristol, said: "I've watched Max play since he was 14 years old at Derby. Max is a really top person; I think he's done really well for this football club."
Ellis's Tribute and Mutual Agreement
Ellis acknowledged the challenges Bird faced during his time at Bristol City, saying: "As I said in my quote, he's had a couple of adverse situations with injury and family stuff, but he has been the ultimate professional through pre-season and was always committed to doing whatever he could to help us start the season properly."
He added: "The opportunity came around; we had to look at each other in the eye and agree mutually that this is the right time. It gives him an opportunity to go to a club that he's always wanted to be part of. From me, from everyone at the football club, we wish Max Bird all the very best."
Bird's Gratitude to Bristol City
Over the weekend, Bird, who came through at Derby before signing for the Robins in February 2024, expressed his gratitude to his former club via social media. He wrote: "To everybody associated with Bristol City Football Club. I would like to take the time to say a big thank you for the moments we have created together over the past two years."
He continued: "From the fans who have believed in me and helped me achieve some great times at this club through the highs and the lows, to every single member of staff who have helped me along the way, from the moment I joined the football club and made me feel at home."
"And finally, my teammates, who I have loved creating memories with both on and off the field. I have made friends for life in that changing room, no doubt about it. I wish the club all the very best in the future. Birdy."
Bird's move to Birmingham City marks the start of a new chapter in his career, with the midfielder set to face his former club in the upcoming fixture at St Andrew's.
