Birmingham City seal Kai Wagner transfer from Philadelphia Union
Birmingham City sign Kai Wagner from Philadelphia Union

Birmingham City have kicked off their January transfer business by securing the signature of German defender Kai Wagner.

Defender arrives from MLS

The club confirmed the acquisition of the left-back from Major League Soccer outfit Philadelphia Union for an undisclosed fee. Wagner has put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half year contract at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park, committing his future to the Championship side until the summer of 2028.

This move marks a return to European football for the 28-year-old, six years after he departed his native Germany for the United States. During his time in MLS, Wagner established himself as one of the league's most productive defenders.

A proven creative force

Wagner's stock rose significantly during his spell in North America, largely due to an exceptional creative output from the full-back position. The left-footed player registered an impressive 29 assists across the last three MLS campaigns, highlighting his attacking threat from wide areas.

His performances were recognised with a place in the MLS Team of the Year for the 2025 season. That campaign saw his Philadelphia Union side finish top of the Eastern Conference, a table that included Lionel Messi's Inter Miami. Although Union were eliminated in the play-offs by New York City, Wagner's individual contributions were a standout feature.

Solving a positional need for Blues

The signing addresses a clear need in Chris Davies's squad. For the past 18 months, first-choice left-back Alex Cochrane has operated with little direct competition, largely due to persistent injury problems for Lee Buchanan.

Wagner's arrival provides much-needed depth and competition for the left-back role as Birmingham City navigate the second half of the Championship season. His experience and proven assist record offer manager Davies a new tactical option and additional quality in the final third.

The transfer, completed on January 2, 2026, represents a statement of intent from the club's owners as they look to strengthen the squad during the winter window. Supporters will be hoping Wagner can adapt quickly to the demands of English football and help propel Blues up the league table.
