John McGinn's double marked a significant personal milestone, being his first-ever brace in the Premier League. Remarkably, it was only the second time he has scored twice in a match during his 311 appearances for the club across all competitions.
His first goal was a sharp finish from Matty Cash's cross, while his second showcased his awareness, capitalising on a poor decision by Forest goalkeeper John Victor to race off his line. McGinn has now doubled his league goal tally from last season and admitted post-match that manager Unai Emery has been pushing him to contribute more.
"The manager pushes us a lot and says I should be scoring a lot more goals," McGinn told the BBC. "Thankfully I managed to get two today... We're building something special here. Villa Park is a fortress at the moment."
Tielemans' Midfield Masterclass
While McGinn took the scoring plaudits, the architect of Villa's dominance was Youri Tielemans. The Belgian midfielder produced a performance of the highest quality, dictating the tempo from the centre of the park.
He completed 32 line-breaking passes – the most by any player in a Premier League game this season – from a total of 98 with a 92% accuracy rate. His 18 passes into the final third consistently put Forest on the back foot, underlining his status as one of the league's premier midfield operators.
Douglas Luiz's Emotional Return & Champions League Pathways
The match saw an emotional return for former Villa favourite Douglas Luiz, who came on as a late substitute for Forest. The Brazilian, sold to Juventus in the summer of 2024 to help the club comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules, was warmly applauded by the home fans.
