Aston Villa Reunion Unlikely for Duran After Tottenham's Winter Snub
Former Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran is unlikely to make a return to the Premier League in the near future, according to a report from Football Insider. The publication adds that Tottenham Hotspur snubbed the opportunity to sign the player during the January transfer window. Duran, currently 22 years old, is on loan at Zenit Saint Petersburg in Russia.
Duran's Journey Since Leaving Aston Villa
Duran was sold by Unai Emery's Aston Villa side to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia back in January 2025. During his time in the Middle East, he impressed by scoring 12 goals in 18 games. Following his stint in Saudi Arabia, the forward had a brief period with Fenerbahce in Turkey before his recent switch to Zenit Saint Petersburg.
Journalist Pete O'Rourke commented on the situation, stating, "Yeah, as you said, was only last January that he went to Al Nassr from Aston Villa as well. He's been in America. He's come to Aston Villa. Then he's gone to Saudi Pro League with Al Nassr. He's gone to Fenerbahce for a short spell. Now he's ended up in Russia with Zenit St. Petersburg."
Challenges for a Premier League Return
O'Rourke highlighted the difficulties any club might face in signing Duran on a permanent basis. "I think it's a difficult deal for any club to really sign Duran on a permanent basis because he's on such a lucrative deal out in the Saudi Pro League. He seems to just be a bit of a globetrotter right now John Duran with his moves as well, so I don't think there's any immediate move maybe back to the Premier League."
He also noted Duran's potential, saying, "He showed at Aston Villa what he can do in the Premier League when he's fit and firing, he's definitely a top striker, and he scored goals in the Saudi Pro League as well."
Duran's Time at Aston Villa
Aston Villa originally signed Jhon Duran from Chicago Fire in 2022 after he caught their eye in Major League Soccer. During his tenure at Villa Park, he scored 20 goals in 78 matches under manager Unai Emery before departing for Al-Nassr. His move to the Saudi Pro League at a young age was seen as a disappointment by some observers.
Duran provided strong backup to Ollie Watkins in the attacking department during his days at Aston Villa. In response to his departure, the club entered the market last month to sign Tammy Abraham from Besiktas. The 28-year-old Abraham, who has previously played for Chelsea, Roma, and AC Milan, has made four appearances in all competitions since joining, contributing one goal to add competition and depth to Villa's attack.
With Duran's current loan at Zenit Saint Petersburg and the financial complexities of his contract, a reunion with Aston Villa or any Premier League side remains improbable for now, leaving fans to watch his progress from afar.
