Andy Murray Named Most Inspirational British Sports Star of the 21st Century

Andy Murray has been voted the most inspirational British sports star of the 21st century, according to a new poll of 2,000 adults. The tennis legend, who became the first British Wimbledon men's champion since 1936, topped the list ahead of notable figures like Lewis Hamilton and David Beckham.

Poll Results and Key Qualities

The survey, commissioned by JustGiving, revealed that Murray was followed by Chris Hoy and Mo Farah in the rankings, with Hamilton and Beckham completing the top five. Other highly ranked athletes include Jessica Ennis-Hill, Marcus Rashford, and Harry Kane, while darts sensation Luke Littler was noted for his recent impact on the sport.

Key inspirational qualities identified by respondents include:

  • Setting a good example (43%)
  • Humility (40%)
  • Positive attitude (38%)
  • Exceptional sporting achievements (36%)
  • Charity work (26%)

Notably, charity work ranked higher than goals scored (24%), with 30% of Brits inspired by athletes' charitable efforts to participate in sporting fundraisers themselves.

Impact on Fundraising and Activity

Pascale Harvie, president and general manager of JustGiving, commented on the findings, stating, "Sports stars have a unique ability to inspire people in all sorts of ways. Their achievements can motivate fans to push their own limits or believe that big goals are possible." She highlighted that nearly a third of Brits have been inspired into action by athletes' charitable work.

The research also showed that 41% of those polled were inspired to become more active by watching sports, while 84% said watching sport made them want to try it. A third were motivated by personal challenges, and 19% aimed to develop skills after memorable sporting moments.

Top Team Achievements and Future Events

In team achievements, the Lionesses winning the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 was voted the most inspirational club sporting achievement of the century. This was followed by Team GB's record medal haul at the London 2012 Olympics and Leicester City's Premier League win in 2016.

Looking ahead to 2026, fans are most excited about events like the World Cup, Wimbledon, and the Winter Olympics, with the Six Nations, British Grand Prix, and Commonwealth Games also highly anticipated. Over a quarter (26%) of respondents said major sporting events this year will encourage them to donate or fundraise.

Fundraising Trends and Data

JustGiving data indicates that running is the most popular activity for fundraising, followed by walks and treks, then cycling. Half marathons are the most common distance, while full marathons generate the highest donation totals. In 2025, the platform saw £235 million raised through sporting and fitness events, a 6% year-on-year increase.

Harvie added, "2026 is shaping up to be a huge year for sport, packed with iconic tournaments. If trends continue, it could be an equally big year for sports-related fundraising, with people inspired by established and emerging stars to use sport as a force for good."
