Morrisons Pioneers Stoma-Friendly Accessible Bathrooms Across UK Stores
Morrisons has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first supermarket chain in the United Kingdom to implement stoma-friendly features in all its accessible bathrooms. This groundbreaking initiative follows extensive consultation with customers and guidance from the charity Colostomy UK, aiming to enhance dignity and convenience for individuals living with a stoma.
Nationwide Implementation and Key Features
The changes are being rolled out across every Morrisons supermarket in England, Scotland, and Wales. The new stoma-friendly additions include practical elements designed to address daily challenges: hooks for hanging clothing or bags, a dedicated shelf for storing supplies, a discreet disposal bin, and a mirror to assist with appliance checks. These features, while simple, are transformative for users, reducing barriers and improving accessibility in public spaces.
Leadership and Community Collaboration
David Scott, Corporate Affairs Director at Morrisons, emphasized the company's commitment to listening to customer feedback. "We're really pleased to introduce these improvements in all our stores after listening to customers and with guidance from Colostomy UK," he stated. The initiative was inspired by a heartfelt letter from Edward Mountain, a Member of the Scottish Parliament and bowel cancer survivor, who shared his personal experiences with a stoma. Scott noted, "We found his letter incredibly moving. From this, we recognised that living with a stoma is often a hidden experience that still brings practical challenges in daily life."
Impact and Advocacy
Edward Mountain expressed immense gratitude for Morrisons' proactive response. "As a bowel cancer survivor, and as someone who's lived with the consequences of bowel surgery and a stoma, I cannot emphasise how important this is," he commented. "These new facilities will make bathrooms easier to use, more accessible, and spell the end of the difficulties, embarrassment and discomfort many of us faced to this point." He hopes other supermarkets and public-facing businesses will follow this exemplary model.
Charity Support and Broader Implications
Giovanni Cinque, Marketing and Campaigns Manager at Colostomy UK, highlighted the critical need for such facilities. "Our research shows that access to suitable toilets remains one of the biggest barriers to people living confidently with a stoma," he explained. Many individuals report planning journeys meticulously, cutting trips short, or avoiding outings due to uncertainty about available facilities. Cinque praised Morrisons' commitment, stating, "Stoma friendly features such as a shelf, a bin for discreet disposal, hooks and a mirror may seem simple, but they make a real difference to comfort, dignity and peace of mind."
This initiative represents a significant step toward reducing everyday barriers and improving access to suitable facilities across the country, setting a new standard for inclusivity in the retail sector.
