Nationwide Pioneers Full Accessibility Guides Across All UK Branches

Nationwide Building Society has made history by becoming the first UK bank to publish comprehensive accessibility guides for every one of its 605 branches. This groundbreaking initiative is part of the bank's ongoing commitment to financial inclusion and aims to provide enhanced support for disabled households across the country.

Detailed Guides Developed with Accessibility Experts

The bank collaborated with leading accessibility specialists AccessAble to create these detailed guides. They include crucial information about features such as step-free access, hearing loop systems, lowered counters, and the availability of British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters. Over 500 branch guides are already live online, with all 605 scheduled to be complete by the end of May 2026.

Call for Wider Business Adoption

Nationwide is now urging all British businesses to follow their example in making accessibility information readily available. Stephen Noakes, Nationwide's Director of Retail, emphasized the importance of this approach: "At Nationwide, we are continuously working to create accessible and inclusive experiences, so everyone has the ability to do their banking with ease and in the way that they choose."

Noakes added: "While there is no single solution to accessibility, ensuring people can easily find out whether they can enter your premises is about as straightforward as it gets. Start with sharing the facts."

Industry Experts Applaud the Initiative

Financial experts have welcomed the move, particularly as many banks continue to retreat from high streets. Rob Mansfield, Independent Financial Advisor at Rootes Wealth Management, told Newspage: "This is a fantastic idea. With many banks retreating from the high streets, we risk isolating people who need those in-person services."

Mansfield noted: "It's especially difficult for those who need additional support and so setting out what services are available is a big help to those who rely on them. I've seen people move accounts when their branch has shut so they may even pick up a few accounts doing this."

Branch Network Commitment and Expansion

Nationwide has committed to keeping all 605 branches open until at least 2030, recognizing their essential role in serving communities. The bank reports seeing daily how crucial physical branches remain for many customers. Following Nationwide's lead, Virgin Money has announced plans to publish similar accessibility guides for all 91 of its branches by the end of the year.

This initiative represents a significant step forward in making banking services more inclusive and accessible to all customers, particularly those with disabilities who rely on clear information about available support services when visiting branches.
