17 UK Airports Still Enforce 100ml Liquid Rule

Despite a change in government policy, passengers at 17 major UK airports will still face the old 100ml liquid rule this summer. The restriction limits liquids in hand luggage to containers no larger than 100ml, even if partially full.

Airports Still Enforcing the 100ml Rule

The following airports continue to enforce the 100ml limit: Manchester, Teesside, Aberdeen, Isle of Man, London City, Southampton, Newcastle, Leeds Bradford, Cardiff, Liverpool, Inverness, East Midlands, London Luton, London Stansted, Norwich, Glasgow Prestwick, and Glasgow International.

Airports That Have Scrapped the Rule

Some airports have scrapped the 100ml rule due to new CT scanners, which provide more detailed scan images. Passengers at Heathrow, Edinburgh, and Birmingham can now take up to 2 litres of liquids through security.

Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “A whole generation of travellers have only known the 100ml rule to be the case, so it really is a momentous day as we become the first airport in Scotland to lift the rule since it was introduced in 2006.”

Gatwick, the UK's second-largest airport, has also relaxed the rule, stating: “If you do take liquids in your hand luggage, containers can now hold up to two litres. These containers can remain in your hand luggage for security screening.”

Heathrow chief executive Thomas Woldbye said: “Every Heathrow passenger can now leave their liquids and laptops in their bags at security as we become the largest airport in the world to roll out the latest security scanning technology. That means less time preparing for security and more time enjoying their journey – and millions fewer single-use plastic bags.”
