EasyJet Flight to Tenerife Diverts to Gatwick Over Passenger Welfare Issue
An easyJet service from Edinburgh to Tenerife was compelled to divert to London Gatwick Airport following a welfare concern onboard the aircraft. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, disrupting travel plans for passengers bound for the Canary Islands.
Flight Details and Diversion
Flight EZY3201 departed Edinburgh Airport at 3.35 pm, scheduled to arrive at Tenerife South shortly after 8 pm. However, mid-journey, the Airbus A320 was ordered to reroute. Flight-tracking data indicates the plane was cruising at approximately 35,000 feet over Brittany before turning back towards the United Kingdom.
The aircraft landed safely at Gatwick Airport just after 5.30 pm. easyJet confirmed the diversion was due to a welfare issue, though specific details about the nature of the concern have not been disclosed by the airline.
Emergency Procedures and Passenger Communication
Despite the diversion, the flight crew did not activate the general emergency 7700 squawk, which is used to signal emergencies such as technical or medical situations to air traffic controllers. This procedure allows for a coordinated response from ground crews.
In an online message to passengers, easyJet expressed regret for the disruption, stating, "We're very sorry that your flight has now been diverted. This is due to a welfare issue." The airline attributed the incident to an extraordinary circumstance outside their control and assured travelers that they planned to refuel and continue the flight as soon as possible.
Resumption of Journey
After the unplanned stopover at Gatwick, the aircraft was scheduled to depart London at approximately 9.45 pm to resume its journey to Tenerife. The anticipated arrival time in the Canary Islands was around 2.30 am, significantly later than originally planned.
This incident highlights the protocols in place for handling passenger welfare issues during flights, ensuring safety remains a top priority even when it leads to travel delays.
