A Ryanair flight arriving at Newcastle International Airport was met by waiting police officers after a passenger became involved in a disturbance that saw her tear out her own hair extensions. The incident ended with 25-year-old Caitlin Anderson being arrested and later fined for her behaviour on board.
Anderson, a customer service administrator from Govanhill Street in Glasgow, was travelling on the flight on 10 July when crew members made the decision to contact authorities ahead of landing. Police were waiting on the tarmac as the aircraft touched down, responding to reports of a passenger who had been "disruptive" towards staff and involved in a confrontation with a fellow passenger.
Court hears of chaotic scenes
Newcastle Magistrates' Court was told that Anderson had been "acting weirdly" as described by witnesses, with prosecutor Christopher O'Brien outlining the chaos that unfolded on board. Officers boarded the plane after it came to a standstill and found Anderson unsteady on her feet, with signs that she had been tearing at her hair extensions.
"The police at Newcastle International Airport were contacted by the crew on the flight because of a disruptive passenger," Mr O'Brien said. "That passenger was this defendant. Officers boarded the flight once it had landed and it appeared there had been issues between the defendant and the passenger sitting next to her on the flight."
He added: "She was unsteady on her feet. She had been tearing out her hair extensions. Her behaviour on the flight was certainly disruptive."
Hospital assessment and guilty plea
After her arrest, Anderson was initially taken to hospital because officers suspected she may have consumed a substance that contributed to her state. She was later transferred to a police station, where she was formally charged with being disruptive on an aircraft.
Appearing in court this week, Anderson pleaded guilty to the offence. Her defence solicitor Janice Hall said her client was "thoroughly ashamed" and "devastated" by the incident, adding that her behaviour was "totally out of character".
Miss Hall explained: "She was immediately taken to hospital as there were concerns she may have consumed a substance, which contributed to her behaviour. She's thoroughly embarrassed by it and devastated. It's totally out of character."
Sentencing
Magistrates imposed a fine of £1,477 for the offence, alongside court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £591. The total financial penalty amounted to £2,153. The court also noted that Anderson had one previous conviction on her record, although no details were given in open court.
The case highlights the strict enforcement of rules regarding disruptive behaviour on flights. Passengers who cause problems can face arrest at the gate and prosecution, with fines often running into the thousands of pounds. Airlines routinely report such incidents, and travellers are reminded that safety considerations on board aircraft are paramount.
