Ryanair is implementing sweeping changes to its hand luggage policy that will affect millions of passengers across the UK and Europe. The new regulations come into effect on Monday, 6th November, marking one of the most significant shifts in the budget airline's baggage approach in recent years.
What's Changing for Ryanair Passengers?
The revised policy introduces a stricter approach to cabin baggage, with only one small personal item permitted in the cabin for free. This item must fit under the seat in front of you and cannot exceed dimensions of 40cm x 20cm x 25cm.
The New Priority Boarding Premium
Passengers wishing to bring a larger wheelie bag into the cabin must now pay for Priority Boarding at an increased rate of £6. This premium service allows one small bag plus one larger cabin bag weighing up to 10kg.
Last-Minute Gate Check Fees
In a move that's likely to catch many travellers off guard, Ryanair will now charge £20 per bag for passengers who bring oversized luggage to the gate without having purchased Priority Boarding. This fee represents a significant increase from previous charges and applies to each leg of the journey.
Why the Changes?
The airline states these measures are designed to "speed up boarding and reduce flight delays". With over 3,000 daily flights across Europe, Ryanair claims that previous baggage policies were causing boarding bottlenecks and departure delays that affected the entire schedule.
What This Means for Travellers
- Pack smarter and lighter to avoid additional costs
- Consider paying for Priority Boarding if you need more cabin space
- Check baggage dimensions carefully before heading to the airport
- Allow extra time for potential baggage issues at the gate
The changes come just as the winter travel season begins, meaning thousands of holidaymakers and business travellers will need to adapt quickly to avoid unexpected charges.
