Chuba Akpom has finalized his permanent move from Ajax to Ipswich Town, following his decision to reject Birmingham City's advances last summer. The striker, who joined Ipswich on loan after their relegation from the Premier League, has now secured a full transfer after the Tractor Boys earned promotion back to the top flight.
Akpom's Move to Ipswich
Birmingham City were eager to sign Akpom during the 2025 summer transfer window, but the former Middlesbrough forward chose Ipswich instead. In September 2025, Akpom revealed he was 'close to joining' Blues but opted for Portman Road, citing Ipswich's style, squad, and manager as key factors. He stated, 'The way that the team is set up really suits me.'
During the 2025/26 season, the 30-year-old made 31 appearances, scoring only two goals, with just ten starts in the Championship. However, Ipswich's promotion triggered an obligation to buy, and the club confirmed: 'Ipswich Town is pleased to confirm Chuba Akpom will join the Blues on a permanent deal. The permanent deal for Chuba, which runs until 2029, will come into effect from 1 July.'
Birmingham's Alternative Signing
Birmingham City signed Marvin Ducksch from Werder Bremen on August 7, 2025, four days before Ipswich announced the Akpom loan. The German striker scored ten league goals in 33 games, providing a strong alternative for Blues.
