Manchester Airport has announced that passengers wearing a sunflower lanyard will now have access to all lanes at departure security, enhancing support for those with hidden disabilities. The lanyard identifies wearers who may require additional time or understanding while passing through the airport.
Expanded Access for Lanyard Wearers
The sunflower lanyard previously offered access only to the Family and Assisted Travel lane. Now, it grants entry to all security lanes, including those equipped with next-generation screening technology. According to the airport's website, these lanes provide a quicker, quieter, and more customer-friendly process for all passengers.
Security staff have undergone hidden disabilities awareness training to assist passengers with any questions during the security process. The airport states: "The sunflower lanyard now offers access to all lanes at departure security, in addition to our Family and Assisted Travel lane."
How to Obtain a Lanyard
Passengers can collect a sunflower lanyard at Manchester Airport's Assistance Reception areas in Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 check-in halls on the day of travel. The airport advises: "We will be happy to provide you with a lanyard, even if you feel you don't need or haven't booked assisted travel in advance. If you have a Sunflower lanyard already, you can use it if you wish." However, lanyards cannot be posted ahead of travel.
Impact on Passengers
This initiative aims to reduce stress for passengers with hidden disabilities, such as autism, dementia, or anxiety, by ensuring they receive appropriate support. The airport's commitment to training and accessibility reflects a broader effort to improve the travel experience for all.
