Birmingham City have reportedly entered the race to sign FC Basel winger Philip Otele before the summer transfer window closes on September 1. The 27-year-old, who impressed on loan at Hamburg last season, is valued at approximately €5 million (£4.3 million) by the Swiss club.
Blues' busy summer continues
Chris Davies' side have already made five new signings this summer, including Jhon Solis, Luis Vazquez, Kristoffer Lund, Dael Fry, and James Beadle. However, reports suggest further arrivals are expected before the deadline, with Otele emerging as a key target.
According to Give Me Sport, Otele is expected to leave Basel this summer, and Birmingham City are among the latest clubs to register their interest in the adaptable forward. The Nigerian international, who can play on the left wing or as an attacking option, has attracted attention from several clubs across Europe.
Competition for Otele's signature
Championship rivals Derby County have also shown interest in signing Otele, while Italian clubs Frosinone and Lecce are reportedly keen as well. This presents significant competition for the Blues, who will need to move quickly if they are to secure his services.
Otele's impressive tally of 10 goals and five assists across all competitions last season, split between Basel and Hamburg, has made him a sought-after prospect. He also made seven appearances in the Europa League for Basel, scoring twice in the group stage.

When Otele joined Basel from Al Wahda in 2025, former sporting director Daniel Stucki praised the winger's qualities. He said: "Philip Otele is a very explosive player who brings another interesting element to our offensive game with his physique. Thanks to his age, he has already gained a lot of experience and is a great alternative for us on the wing or in attack. We are very happy that this good opportunity has now presented itself and that we have been able to win him for FCB."
Whether Otele will depart Basel this summer remains uncertain, as does the possibility of him making a move to St Andrew's. However, with the transfer window entering its final weeks, Birmingham City will be hoping to finalise a deal that could bolster their promotion push in the Championship.
