West Midlands Metro Reaches 'Another Important Milestone' with Birmingham Eastside Extension
Passenger tram services will commence operations into the Millennium Point stop starting this Easter Sunday, April 5th. This launch represents the initial stage of the ambitious Birmingham Eastside Metro extension project, which will eventually feature two strategically located stops.
The new stations will offer passengers convenient and efficient access to several key destinations throughout the city center. These include Moor Street Station, the Clayton Hotel, the Birmingham City University campus, and the Millennium Point complex itself.
Enhanced Connectivity for Commuters and Visitors
The extension to Millennium Point has been successfully delivered by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), an integral part of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA). A significant feature of this development is the new Albert Street stop, which provides a direct tram link for the approximately 400,000 weekly bus passengers utilizing the Moor Street bus interchange.
This new branch marks the first divergence from the main West Midlands Metro line that connects Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Officials have confirmed that a second branch, extending trams between Wednesbury and Dudley, is scheduled to open later this year.
Leadership Hails Transformative Project
Sandeep Shingadia, executive director of TfWM, emphasized the project's broader impact: "This new extension will bring people closer to the places where they work, study, and visit, while simultaneously supporting local businesses. It is just the beginning of a much wider transformation of our Metro network designed to connect more communities, open up new opportunities for regional growth, and make travel easier and more accessible for everyone."
Sophie Allison, managing director of West Midlands Metro, added: "The entire Metro team is eagerly anticipating welcoming both new and existing customers on this new route as we achieve another crucial milestone in the expansion of our tram network. The two new stops will initially operate with services up to every 15 minutes, delivering substantial benefits for local businesses and the traveling public by linking another vibrant part of the city center to the wider tram system."
Service Adjustments and Timetable Changes
The inauguration of this extension will necessitate adjustments to the existing tram timetable. Certain services that currently run between Bull Street and Grand Central will be rerouted to include the new Millennium Point and Albert Street stops. This integration ensures the new stations become a seamless part of the established network from day one.
The expansion underscores a continued commitment to improving public transport infrastructure in the West Midlands, enhancing mobility, reducing congestion, and supporting economic activity across the region.
