The United Kingdom is preparing for another intense heatwave, with temperatures expected to climb to 32 degrees Celsius within days. This follows a record-breaking end to May that saw thermometers soar past the 30°C threshold. Despite a disappointing start to June, the latest weather models indicate a significant warm-up is imminent.
Heatwave Forecast: When and Where
According to the ECMWF weather model from WX Charts, which relies on Met Desk data, temperatures across the UK are predicted to surge above 30°C once again. Maps are showing red, yellow, and amber hues, signaling that the mercury will begin to rise from June 15. The maximum possible temperature maps highlight June 16 as the peak day, with 32°C on the cards.
A total of 21 counties are expected to experience temperatures exceeding 30°C. Among those set to breach the 32°C mark are Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire, Shropshire, and Lincolnshire. The list also includes Staffordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Northamptonshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, Surrey, Kent, and Berkshire.
Extended Outlook: June 15 to June 28
Looking further ahead, from Monday June 15 to Sunday June 28, the BBC Weather team forecasts warmer and drier conditions than normal. They state: "After the middle of June, it looks like high pressure should often be present across the UK. This should promote warm conditions with temperatures above the early-summer average in most areas and potentially well above on some days, particularly across England and Wales. It should also be drier than normal in most areas."
There is also a possibility that pressure may build across Scandinavia, reinforcing warmer flows. However, if high pressure weakens or shifts northward, low-pressure systems could creep in from the south, bringing an increased chance of heavy showers and thunderstorms by the end of June.
The exact position of the high pressure remains crucial. If it becomes centered further north, northwest, or west, cooler weather could occur. The BBC Weather team adds: "In Friday's outlook, we will see if the return to high pressure dominance still looks probable, and we will be able to take a look into early July."
