Mr Judge stated emphatically: "The biggest mistake people make with parking fines is assuming they can deal with them later or that they will simply go away." He explained that this complacency can lead to severe repercussions. Once payment deadlines are missed, additional charges such as reminder notices, recovery fees, and enforcement costs are routinely added to the original fine.
"A £60 or £100 fine can very quickly double or triple once additional charges are applied, which is why acting early is so important," Mr Judge emphasized. This escalation means that what begins as a manageable expense can swiftly become a substantial debt.

The lawyer further warned that private parking companies actively pursue unpaid charges through the courts. Ignoring correspondence often accelerates this process. "Private parking companies can and do pursue unpaid charges through the courts, and ignoring correspondence is often what pushes cases in that direction," he noted.
Mr Judge also pointed out a common administrative oversight: "If your address on the vehicle logbook is not up to date, you may never see the first letter, and by the time you become aware of the fine, the amount owed may already be far higher." Many drivers also mistakenly dismiss follow-up letters as generic or legally insignificant, exacerbating the situation.

Once a parking charge is transferred to debt recovery, it ceases to be a simple parking violation and becomes a formal debt matter with more serious consequences. In some instances, unpaid parking charges can result in County Court claims, which can adversely affect an individual's financial standing if not addressed properly.
"The key thing drivers need to understand is that early action makes a huge difference, whether that means appealing promptly or paying early to keep the cost down," Mr Judge advised.
