New Parking Rules for Motorhomes and Campervans in Saltburn from June
Motorhome and campervan owners visiting the popular seaside destination of Saltburn will face new parking restrictions starting in June. The changes specifically target Marine Parade, where free parking will now be limited to four hours between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Saturday.
Details of the New Restrictions
From June, vehicles must park only in existing marked bays on the north side of Marine Parade. The rule allows for a maximum stay of four hours during the specified times, with no return permitted for four hours immediately after leaving. This measure aims to manage congestion and improve traffic flow in the tourist hotspot.
To enforce these limits, the council will install parking ticket machines, similar to those used in other free limited waiting areas like The Stray between Redcar and Marske. The council stated this system is necessary to monitor compliance with the four-hour restriction effectively.
Community Reaction and Council Response
Resident Gemma Booth, representing the group Saltburn Against Promenade Changes, expressed concerns about the timing of these costs. She noted that financial resources are already stretched, making additional expenses problematic for the community.
Councillor Carl Quartermain, the cabinet member for highways and transport, emphasized that the new measures will be reviewed after the summer season. He explained, "This will allow us to review real life usage, behavior change, and compile comments from the public to determine what further changes, if any, are required."
Ms Booth also criticized the high parking fees elsewhere in Saltburn, particularly at Pier and Cat Nab parks on the lower foreshore, calling them "exorbitant." In response, Cllr Quartermain pointed out that parking charges across the borough have been frozen for the 2026/27 period.
Background and Compromises
The council first announced its intentions in August, with initial proposals being more stringent. Originally, the plan included a complete prohibition on overnight parking, but this was scaled back following public feedback. Cllr Quartermain added, "Saltburn has a varied offer of parking provision in the town, ranging from free unrestricted parking to pay and display."
Local Labour MP Anna Turley described the revised scheme as a compromise, balancing the needs of residents, visitors, and local authorities. The changes reflect ongoing efforts to address parking challenges while considering community input and practical implementation.
