A recent survey has revealed that the majority of UK drivers are against proposals to introduce more 20mph speed limits on roads across the country. The research, conducted by car insurance comparison site Quotezone.co.uk, found that two-thirds (66%) of motorists oppose reducing existing 30mph roads to 20mph.
Drivers' Concerns
The same proportion of respondents believed that 20mph is simply too slow for most roads. Critics argue that the lower speed limit has been unnecessarily rolled out too widely, leading to frustration among drivers. Birmingham is among the areas where 20mph limits have already been implemented, meaning motorists could theoretically face fines for driving at just 21mph in these zones.
Safety vs. Practicality
While 20mph zones have been introduced for safety reasons, particularly around schools, they remain controversial. A new government road safety strategy may give local councils more powers to reduce speed limits below 30mph on urban roads, potentially expanding the use of 20mph zones.
Greg Wilson, car insurance expert and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk, commented: "With changes to speed limits continuing to be discussed across the UK, our research suggests many motorists remain unconvinced about reducing key 30mph roads to 20mph, with concerns likely centred around journey times and practicality."
However, Wilson also noted evidence from Wales, where lower limits have shown positive impacts on road safety, with fewer people killed or seriously injured in the first year of implementation. He added: "Ultimately, decisions around speed limits sit with local authorities, and they must balance public sentiment with safety outcomes, congestion, and the needs of different road users when assessing what's appropriate for their communities."
Wilson urged drivers to watch for signage and adapt their speed to stay safe and avoid fines as lower limits become more common.
