Motorists in England face fines of up to £160 on approximately 200 additional roads following a major expansion of the School Streets scheme by Transport for London (TfL). The initiative, which restricts traffic outside schools during peak hours, is part of a broader effort to promote walking and improve road safety.
School Streets Scheme Expansion
TfL has confirmed that the School Streets scheme will be extended to cover around 1,000 schools across the capital, up from the current 800. This means traffic will be banned on an estimated 200 more roads at certain times of the day. The expansion is a key component of the Walking and Wheeling Action Plan, unveiled on Wednesday by London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
Pedestrian Crossings and Safety Measures
Alongside the School Streets expansion, the plan includes a target to build 1,000 additional pedestrian crossings by 2031. Christina Calderato, TfL's director of transport strategy, stated: "Walking is already at the heart of how Londoners get around, but we know too many people are still put off by safety concerns, poor crossings or inaccessible streets. This new plan sets out how we'll change that by making it easier and more pleasant to walk for everyday journeys, whether that's getting to school, the station or the local high street."
Official Support for the Initiative
Will Norman, London's walking and cycling commissioner, emphasised the importance of walking for short journeys: "The mayor and I are determined to make walking the safest, easiest and most enjoyable way of getting around London. Whether you're popping to the shops or heading for the local train station, walking for shorter journeys is vital for the health and future prosperity of our city."
Warning for Drivers
Graham Conway, managing director at Select Car Leasing, cautioned that many drivers may unknowingly violate the new restrictions. He said: "Most drivers aren't deliberately flouting the rules, especially if they're on autopilot and using the same route they've used for years and haven't noticed the signage has changed. However, the School Streets scheme is continuing to grow, and it's essential to stay up to date with these restrictions to avoid a costly fine."
Fine Amounts
Fines for driving through a School Street during restricted hours vary by council, but motorists can face penalties ranging from £65 to £160. Drivers are advised to check for updated signage and be aware of changing restrictions on familiar routes.
