The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has officially announced the new rates and eligibility criteria for the Winter Fuel Payment for the 2026-2027 winter season. The payment, ranging from £100 to £300, is designed to help state pensioners with heating costs during the colder months.
Eligibility and Payment Amounts
To qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment, individuals must have been born on or before 27 June 1960 and live in England or Wales. The DWP states: "If you were born before 28 June 1960, you could get between £100 and £300 to help pay your heating bills for winter 2026 to 2027." Eligible pensioners will receive a letter in October or November detailing the specific amount they will receive.
Qualifying Week and Conditions
The amount is determined based on the individual's circumstances during the "qualifying week" from 21 to 27 September 2026. The payment does not affect other benefits. However, certain groups are excluded, including those living outside England and Wales, those who have been in hospital for free treatment for the entire qualifying week and the preceding year, individuals with immigration restrictions on claiming public funds, and those in prison during the qualifying week.
Income Cap and Tax Implications
A key condition is that pensioners with an annual income exceeding £35,000, including the state pension, will not be able to keep the full payment. The DWP explains: "If your income is over £35,000, HMRC will take your Winter Fuel Payment back by either changing your tax code or adding the amount to your Self Assessment tax return."
Beware of Scammers
The DWP warns recipients to be cautious of scams. Accountancy firm Robson Laidler notes that HMRC removed 4,600 fraudulent websites related to Winter Fuel Payment claims in June 2025. Payments are made automatically, and any queries should be directed to a trusted advisor or the official government website at gov.uk.
The Winter Fuel Payment has undergone several changes in recent years, shifting from a universal benefit to a means-tested one and back again. For the 2026-2027 winter, payments will begin in October 2026.
