In the West Midlands, the scheme is particularly beneficial. Normally, children aged five to 15 are charged £1.50 for a single trip on National Express buses. A day ticket within the local zone costs £2.80 for this age group, while those under five travel free all year round. With the free travel offer, families can save significantly on transport costs during the summer break.
For example, a family day out to Woodgate Valley Country Park, accessible via the 23 or 24 bus from Birmingham, can now be enjoyed without any bus fare for children. The park offers pony trekking, cycling, and a chance to see sheep, pigs, and goats at the Urban Farm, making it an affordable day trip thanks to the scheme.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander highlighted the importance of the scheme in helping families. She said: "We're giving families room to breathe from the cost-of-living squeeze. With free bus travel for 5 to 15-year-olds and discounts on kids' meals at restaurants, cinema tickets and theme parks, we're helping people make the most of the time they have together for the school holidays."
She added: "Not only are we lowering costs for the summer, the £2 bus fare cap will help all passengers get to where they need to for less." This refers to the government's announcement that bus fares will be capped at £2 from January, a move expected to save millions of passengers a third on their travel costs, further assisting with the cost-of-living.
