West Midlands Railways has warned passengers to expect disruption this week as temperatures are set to become too hot for trains, with speed restrictions imposed across the network to prevent tracks from buckling.
The Met Office has issued a heat warning for much of England, with temperatures forecast to reach 30°C in parts of the region. In response, Network Rail has introduced temporary speed limits on several routes, which will slow services and cause knock-on delays.
Speed Restrictions in Place on Key Routes
According to West Midlands Railways, the speed restrictions will affect numerous lines, including those between Birmingham and Wolverhampton, and Birmingham and Coventry. Trains will be required to run at reduced speeds, typically 60mph instead of the usual 90mph or more, to reduce the risk of rails expanding and buckling in the heat.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Railways said: “We are working closely with Network Rail to manage the impact of the hot weather on our services. Passengers should check before they travel and allow extra time for their journeys.”
Heatwave Sparks Safety Measures
The restrictions are a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety, as extreme heat can cause tracks to distort, leading to derailments. Network Rail has deployed additional patrols to monitor the tracks and has painted some rails white to reflect sunlight.
Passengers are advised to plan ahead, with the disruption expected to last until the end of the week when temperatures are predicted to cool down. West Midlands Railways has said it will provide updates via its website and social media channels.
Impact on Commuters and Travelers
The disruption is likely to affect commuters traveling to work and those heading to the airport or for leisure. Birmingham New Street, one of the busiest stations in the region, is expected to see delays, and passengers are being urged to consider alternative travel options where possible.
West Midlands Railways has also reminded passengers that they can claim compensation for delays of 15 minutes or more under the Delay Repay scheme. The company said it is monitoring the situation closely and will lift restrictions as soon as it is safe to do so.
